Press Release: Concordia Publishing House Honors Five Seminary Graduates with New Annual Awards
The honorees were named on the Tuesday prior to graduation with the newly created writing awards.
Fort Wayne, IN — As classes draw to a close at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne (CTSFW), students and faculty attended the campus’s Annual Awards Convocation. During the convocation, students were honored with awards in a variety of categories. This is the first year Concordia Publishing House (CPH) has participated in this ceremony, giving away five awards.
“It is our privilege to partner with the faculty of Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne to recognize the academic achievements of these students,” said Jonathan D. Schultz, president and CEO of CPH. “God’s Word brings life, and we give thanks for these students as they look to future academic writing and service to the Church.”
The following awards were presented by CPH:
- The Concordia Publishing House Award for Exegetical Theology Writing: Charles Vincent Shemwell
- The Concordia Publishing House Award for Systematic Theology Writing: Brendan Harris
- The Concordia Publishing House Award for Pastoral Ministry and Missions Writing: Kyle Nelson
- The Concordia Publishing House Award for Historical Theology Writing: Patrick Randolph
- The Concordia Publishing House Award for Graduate School Research and Writing: Rev. Jakob Appell
“The writing awards presented by CPH at the recommendation of the various departments at CTSFW recognize and encourage students in their study,” said Dr. Benjamin T. G. Mayes, assistant professor of historical theology at Concordia Theological Seminary. “Not only must future pastors learn to preach sermons and teach Bible classes, visit the sick, and counsel the distressed, but they must also be watchmen who can respond wisely and insightfully to the challenges facing our Christian faith and life. These awards hold up before our students the necessity and joy of doing this task.”
The awards also signify the mutual growth and ongoing relationship between the seminary campus and Concordia Publishing House, the premier publisher of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod.
