Fort Wayne, Indiana (June 1, 2023)—As classes were drawing to a close at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne (CTSFW), students and faculty attended the campus’s annual Awards Convocation on Tuesday, May 9. During the convocation, five students were honored with awards from Concordia Publishing House (CPH) in a variety of writing categories. This is the second year that CPH has sponsored awards for this ceremony.

“It is a joy to recognize the written and academic achievements of these CTSFW students,” stated Jonathan Schultz, president and CEO of CPH. “We are grateful for their commitment to academic writing and look forward to seeing how they use their God-given gifts in service to the church throughout their future ministry.”

The following students were recognized with awards from CPH:

The Concordia Publishing House Award for Exegetical Writing: Benjamin E. Wessel
The Concordia Publishing House Award for Systematic Theology Writing: Peter Wagner
The Concordia Publishing House Award for Pastoral Ministry and Missions Writing: Justin Chester
The Concordia Publishing House Award for Historical Theology Writing: Anthony Keilani
The Concordia Publishing House Award for Graduate School Research and Writing: Alexander Knowles

“The writing awards presented by CPH at the recommendation of the various departments at CTSFW recognize and encourage students in their study,” said Dr. Benjamin T. G. Mayes, associate professor of historical theology at CTSFW. “Not only must future pastors learn to preach sermons and teach Bible classes, visit the sick, and counsel the distressed, but they must also be watchmen who can respond wisely and insightfully to the challenges facing our Christian faith and life. These awards hold up before our students the necessity and joy of doing this task.”

In addition to honoring the work of five CTSFW seminary graduates, these awards signify the ongoing collaboration between the two organizations and emphasize their shared goal to encourage Lutheran pastors and church workers.
