Tensions and Complexities in Faith: How Scripture impacts the real lives of Christians

Life is not black and white here on Earth, as much as we’d like it to be. We want things to be clear, to be easily understandable. We want the line to be clearly drawn—this is true, this is false.

Life in this world is not always clear, and sometimes even the Scriptures seem unclear. We wonder, “How can Jesus be true God and true man? How are we sinners and saints? How do we live in the now and the not yet?” When we struggle to understand even the basics of our faith, how can we be expected to defend it?

Alfonso Espinosa, a pastor and professor, recognized that everyday Christians were asking big questions about these seemingly contradictory paradoxes in the Bible. And because they didn’t understand these complexities, they had trouble articulating their faith. So he wrote Faith That Sees through the Culture to address these dualities in Scripture.

Because these dualities do not exist in a vacuum—they impact our understanding of how we live in our culture. When we have a correct interpretation of these biblical paradoxes, we can better understand and live out our faith in the world today.

What People are Saying about Faith That Sees through the Culture

—Rev. John J. Bombaro, PhD, LCDR, CHC, USNR, Grace Lutheran Church, San Diego, CA

“A timely and important response to the moral relativism that has infected our world today.”

—Douglas S. Cavanaugh, Founder and CEO The Ruby Restaurant Group
