"And so we need an extraordinary Shepherd. Enter t "And so we need an extraordinary Shepherd. Enter the Servant! He leads his flock to find food on barren heights (49:9), and in the hottest of weather, he gives his sheep unlimited water (49:10). Their path is straight (49:11) despite the hilly country where sheep usually graze. This Servant even has the ability to tend to a huge number of sheep that are drawn from great distances (49:12).

The pinnacle of his ministry comes when, like a Lamb, he is led to the slaughter (53:7). Golgotha is no green pasture; rather, spit and blood are caked to his cheeks. Quiet waters? He thirsts, his lips are cracked and swollen, his throat is parched from the hot Palestinian sun. He passes through the valley of the shadow of death as pain twangs her morbid melody. There is no rod or staff for comfort. And the cup overflows all right; he drinks the cup full of the wrath of God Almighty. Surely goodness and mercy are twisted and perverted in the most inhumane way. Reflecting on this great love, Peter writes: “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls” (1 Pet 2:24–25 ESV).

When I am lost and exiled, my Shepherd Jesus leaves the ninety-nine and runs after me (Lk 15:3–7). When I am confused by the voices of demons and devils, he calls me by name, and I know that voice (Jn 10:2–4, 27). When I am filthy, he is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (Jn 1:29, 36). Jesus is my Shepherd who gathers me in his arms, holds me, heals me, and carries me close to his heart forever." —Dr. Reed Lessing, Isaiah 40-55 - Concordia Commentary
Almighty and everlasting God, grant us by Your gra Almighty and everlasting God, grant us by Your grace so to pass through this holy time of our Lord’s passion that we may obtain the forgiveness of our sins; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The rise of transgenderism in modern society goes The rise of transgenderism in modern society goes directly against what God says about men, women, and our bodies. With such a divisive topic, it can be difficult to have meaningful discussions with others of differing viewpoints. Dr. Scott Stiegemeyer's new book, Responding to Transgenderism in Light of God's Word, is a thoughtful, biblical discussion that will help you navigate these discussions.
Holy Week invites us to remember Christ’s sufferin Holy Week invites us to remember Christ’s suffering, sacrifice, and triumphant resurrection. In Luther’s Works, Volume 63, Martin Luther illuminates how Christ’s death and resurrection bring complete forgiveness.
Why does Lutheran Service Book place confirmation Why does Lutheran Service Book place confirmation hymns under "Baptismal Life" rather than a separate "Confirmation" section? Because confirmation isn't a graduation. It's the catechumens publicly confessing their baptismal faith and stating their intention to remain firm in this confession by the power of God's Grace.

Learn about three confirmation hymns from Lutheran Service Book and see their history on the CPH Blog.
Lift Your Eyes: How to Live Outside Yourself "hera Lift Your Eyes: How to Live Outside Yourself "heralds the arrival of a gifted new writer with a warm heart and a popular touch. In this book, Joshua Pfeiffer tackles some of the darkest, deepest issues in our self-absorbed society in a lucid, winsome way. He weaves a colorful tapestry of biblical, personal, practical, and pastoral insights into a bright, coherent vision of life in the world. With the eyes of a skilled artist, he explores various kinds of looking—away from ourselves, up to Jesus in faith and thanksgiving, and out to others in love, so that we can look honestly into ourselves and forward in hope to eternal life with God."
—Dr. John W. Kleinig

Lift Your Eyes will be available May 19.

"Decaying skeletons are revived in hearing the pro "Decaying skeletons are revived in hearing the prophecies of God. Graveyards are opened; the dead are raised—and the Lord does it all! Lifeless creatures respond to the breath of the Holy Spirit. Hostile flesh wars against God and dies, but those continually revived by the Spirit live in peace. Dead Lazarus is three days entombed in stench, and yet, when Jesus speaks, he rises, he lives! Lazarus sheds the shroud of death, and the Lord has done it all! " —Worship Planning Book, Year A
Doctrine that focuses on our own works or decision Doctrine that focuses on our own works or decisions allows doubt to creep in. Lutheranism, however, shows us that "God leaves nothing to chance or accident. The purpose of right doctrine is certainty of your salvation. When your pastor bound himself to the Book of Concord “because” it was a clear confession of the truth of the Word of God, promising to align his preaching and teaching to this doctrinal standard, he confessed a certainty that is rare in many corners of Christendom." —Rev. Dr. Matthew Harrison, The Comfort of Lutheran Doctrine (pg. 66)
